The lecture primarily concerned wood, as a building material, but also wooden constructions. The lecturer covered basic and special concepts related to this natural material and which should be understood by the new engineer - designer - researcher, so that it is possible to use wood correctly in applications and constructions. Additionally, elements related to the macroscopic, physical and microscopic characteristics of wood were analyzed. Also, its meaning was discussed risk rating on timber structures and provided technical information that the new engineer should know about a timber or composite structure. Durability classes per use explained (Use-classes) of the main types of wood, which are directly related to its biological resistance, based on the EN 350 standard. In addition, the European standard EN 338 was briefly discussed, which concerns the grading of structural wood based on its mechanical strength. Finally, some maintenance techniques were mentioned for the proper protection of wooden structures.
