The lecture primarily concerned wood, as a building material, but also wooden structures. The speaker covered basic and specific concepts related to this natural material and which should be understood by the new engineer - designer - researcher, so that the correct use of wood in applications and structures is possible. In addition, elements related to the macroscopic, physical and microscopic characteristics of wood were analyzed. Also, the concept of risk rating for wooden structures and technical information was provided that the new engineer should know for a wooden or mixed structure. The durability classes per use were explained (Use-classes) of the main types of wood, which are directly related to its biological resistance, based on the EN 350 standard. In addition, the European standard EN 338 was briefly discussed, which concerns the grading of structural timber based on its mechanical resistance. Finally, certain maintenance techniques for the proper protection of wooden structures were mentioned.
