Lecture on the new technologies of modified wood by Professor Giorgos Mantanis University of Thessaly

SERIES OF SCIENTIFIC LECTURES – DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF THESSALIA

The scientific lecture on "Innovative modified wood products - Applications in exterior constructions" was held by Professor Giorgos Mantanis, Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences & Design, University of Thessaly.

SUMMARY

This lecture concerns the modern technologies of thermal and chemical modification of wood, which aim at highly innovative wood products with improved physical, mechanical, chemical and biological properties. The speaker, after a brief introduction to the concept of wood modification, tries to explain in a simple way disadvantages of the natural material, which need both improvement and limitation. Then, it presents two of the main modified wood products that are of interest to the new engineer, designer and technologist and are currently -in Europe- applied in a variety of constructions. Additionally, the technologies of wood acetylation and furfurylation are briefly analyzed and data are given on the advantages of the products produced, based on both the international literature and the Greek experience from laboratory collaborations. Finally, the technology of the thermal modification of wood is presented and - for example - a related product, suitable for building cladding and exterior floors.
