“Wood and wooden constructions”
Lecture by Professor George Mantanis at an event of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Thessaly (31-03-2021)
The lecture was primarily about wood, as a building material, but also wooden constructions. The rapporteur covered basic and specific concepts related to this natural material and which should be understood by the new engineer – designer – designer, in order to be able to use wood properly in applications and constructions. Additionally, data related to the macroscopic, physical and microscopic characteristics of the wood were analyzed. Also, the concept of hazard rating for wooden constructions was discussed and technical data were given that the new engineer should be aware of for a wooden or mixed construction. The use-classes of the main types of wood, which are directly related to its biological strength, based on the EN 350 standard, were explained. In addition, the European standard EN 338, which concerns the grading of structural timber, was briefly discussed. based on its mechanical strength. Finally, some maintenance techniques were mentioned for the proper protection of wooden structures.
